By intentionally inviting more feminine energy into the studio, Katy Guillen & The Drive have crafted one of their most expansive and vulnerable records yet with their sophomore album Make That Sound (October 2025).
Formed in 2019 in Kansas City, Missouri, the independent Indie Roots Rock duo features partners Katy Guillen (vocals, guitar) and Stephanie Williams (drums). Their 2022 debut, Another One Gained—produced by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Heartless Bastards)—received widespread indie acclaim. That success was followed by Another One Gained Deluxe, which included the Spanish-language rendition Batallas, a reimagining of the fan-favorite Battles featuring Latin Grammy winner Mireya Ramos (Flor De Toloache) on violin and vocals.
Beyond the music, Guillen & Williams are committed to creating empowered spaces for women in music. Their live shows embody that ethos, spotlighting an all-female powerhouse lineup defined by technical skill and dynamic chemistry. That commitment carried directly into Make That Sound. As Guillen explains, “Having never worked with a woman in the studio, that’s something we wanted to change. We wanted more female energy, ideas, and power to influence this album.”
That intention led them to producer Megan McCormick (Allison Russell, Amythyst Kiah). The immediate trust and creative spark between the three fueled an intensive, collaborative process—shaping songwriting, arrangements, live tracking, and overdubs in just a few days. “The recording process was dense and fast,” Williams recalls. “It required being totally present, trusting our instincts, and stepping into uncharted territory.” Guillen adds, “I felt inspired by the strong women in my life, the love I’ve built with my partner, and the resilience I’ve found in difficult times.”
The result is an album that celebrates empowerment, vulnerability, honesty, and love. Supporting the vision were engineers Brandon Bell (Brandi Carlile, Joni Mitchell) and Annie Petrik, with mastering by Kim Rosen (Bonnie Raitt, Allison Russell). Make That Sound will be released through Nashville-based indie label and artist collective Are & Be Recordings.
Glide is premiering the potent new track “Outcome,” which rattles with a relentless rock vibe, combining Wet Leg’s modern edge and Courtney Barnett’s knack for guitar-based hooks. Katy Guillen & The Drive. With screaming guitar and ferocious chops, this power duo leaves nothing to the imagination, with a kick-ass throwback garage rock presentation.
“I initially wrote this song for a younger loved one as a song of encouragement. The recording truly captures the bold and energetic spirit of the song,” says Guillen.”This song is about finding your voice and going for what you want in life, no matter the challenges or hurdles you face. It’s a call to push through self doubt and create your space in the world. You can steer the outcome.“
