LUCKY is a new Bay Area supergroup featuring Andrew St James, Peter Kegler (Half Stack), Marika Christine, and Zach Elsasser (Affectionately, Half Stack). “Friends” is their third single to be released on Royal Oakie Records this year, following up their debut singles “Traveler” and “Falling Through.”

LUCKY is slowly becoming one of the most exciting figures to emerge in alt-country in some time. The band’s new single, “Friends,” is yet another glistening, rocking example of their individuality as LUCKY pieces together a barn-burner of a ballad. The band’s new single finds them expanding on the nuances that made their previous singles feel so fresh, but “Friends” proves it isn’t all about rewriting the rules for LUCKY. There is a toe-tapping, danceable charm to the band’s latest that is both complex yet welcoming, forcing the performance to land somewhere between the psychedelic underworld and a radio-ready anthem. While there is a familiarity to the infectious melodies, LUCKY successfully manipulates these tropes into something they can call their own by capturing the essence of their personal experiences and laying them bare for all to see, adding a sentimental vulnerability to the explosive performance. LUCKY is quickly carving out a lane for itself, and “Friends” is another stepping stone towards a promising catalog from the new outfit.

“I wrote ‘Friends’ soon after Peter and I decided to make music together. During that period of time, I’d been jumping back and forth between San Francisco and Los Angeles super regularly…playing shows, attending parties, and whatnot,” explains St James. “Too many late nights to count. I’ve got a lot of good friends in both places, who all seem to have a tendency to live on the edge, and this song’s for them!”
