Moss Henry’s love for the sea runs deep—so much so that when it came time to record his debut album in 2023, he chose the island of St. John in the Virgin Islands as his studio. The result was Gone Away, a whirlwind seven-day session that captured 21 tracks with a powerhouse lineup of both island and stateside musicians.

But don’t mistake Henry for another “toes in the water, ass in the sand” escapist songwriter. His music carries a rugged soulfulness and twangy depth, calling to mind artists like Chris Young and Steve Earle.

Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to a singer-songwriter mother and raised in a family steeped in Southern gospel tradition, Moss found his footing early, singing in church choirs, holding down bass lines in high school jazz bands, and tearing it up in garage rock groups. At East Tennessee State University, he discovered a deep love for traditional country music, honing his songwriting and mastering the upright bass — skills that would set the stage for a career built on both craft and charisma. After making his mark in Knoxville with his first band, Whiskey Sessions, he followed his restless spirit to Tybee Island, Georgia, joining local favorites Baked Alaska and embracing the saltwater life so fully that he earned his captain’s license.

Glide is premiering his song “Potholes,” a slice of gritty country blues that offers a therapeutic reminder to roll with life’s punches without letting setbacks keep you down.

“Potholes came from all those little bumps in the road that life throws at you. The kind you can’t always dodge. I wanted it to feel like a conversation with an old friend, equal parts grit and hope. At its core, it’s about keeping your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the horizon, no matter how rough the ride gets.”
