Does a band ever honestly know when it is time to release a proper debut album? Does a cult-like following need to be established? Do social media and streaming numbers need to be through the roof, or does the feeling part of the creative process take over? There is no precise formula to follow, and no clear way of telling that, even if the stars align perfectly, that it is actually the correct time for a band to put their entire lives into a single tracklist. For Social Cinema, the power-pop quintet, now is as good a time as any.
After spending their first few years as a band releasing singles at a prolific rate, specifically 22 songs in three years stretched out across two EPs and a compilation record, Social Cinema proudly announces Don’t Get Lost, their debut album set to be released on October 2 via Midtopia. The album will feature recently released singles, “You Want My Love” and “Deadly,” but the announcement of this anticipated LP is accompanied by the sleek pop grooves of “It’s Only Weed,” and Glide is proud to premiere the latest single.
“It’s Only Weed” is “about trying not to buy drugs when you go downtown,” according to Social Cinema frontman Griffin Bush. The latest preview of Don’t Get Lost is punchy with its pulsating drum patterns, tinted with the glow of the neon guitar melodies that dance with the criminally smooth vocals. “It’s Only Weed” continues to prove that the band is not merely making pop records; there is a science to their infectiousness. The lyrics of this record carry with them a subdued rawness that brings real-life scenarios to the blissfulness of the instrumentation, creating an enticing juxtaposition reminiscent of Wolf Parade and Bloc Party.
