LISTEN: JayWood’s “PISTACHIOS” Is Beautifully Funky Hip-hop

JayWood is Jeremy Haywood-Smith from Winnipeg, MB. The project started as sad jangle pop songs, just singing about how sad or miserable he was, but things slowly began to change as time went on (both style and direction-wise) into the more “psych funk” sound that is shown today. JayWood carries a unique sound that has been entirely self-taught, and manages to combine indie-pop with jazz chords and a psychedelic feel. His music is heartfelt and therapeutic at its core, but hosts a feel-good dance party at live performances.

On his first album in three years, JayWood emerges with a sound he can officially call his own, and “PISTACHIOS” is just the start. With the charisma of classic funk, the irresistible bounce of hitmakers from the past, and a fresh perspective that is put poetically through the lyrics, JayWood creates a tune that lands somewhere between pure self-expression and a radio-ready hit. That middle ground seems to be where the artist thrives, challenging himself through vulnerability and creative risks while honing these experiments into digestible, danceable Hip-hop. “PISTACHIOS” is a neon-lit carnival ride through JayWood’s artistry, with flavors ranging from soulful melodies to looped Hip-hop excellence. Through the colorful arrangement, JayWood delivers a passionate vocal performance that emphasizes the celebratory autobiographical lyrics, and the artist has plenty to celebrate. “PISTACHIOS” is just the start of the magic that is contained on JayWood’s latest LP, an album that has its sights set on a breakthrough.
