Continuing our salute to Down’s classic NOLA album (that turned an astounding 30 years old this month), after yesterday’s slamming Manic Monday selection, today we’re spotlighting their more melodic side with the Skynyrd-flavored “Stone the Crow”. While probably their most radio-friendly song off the album, it still nonetheless hits hard, not so much from a sonic perspective (although it’s still a solid ripper), but mainly because it captures the type of soulfully raw energy and visceral passion that characterizes NOLA as a whole. Perhaps that’s what gives the album such a palpably primeval and gritty feel: underneath all the unbridled aggression and intensity, there’s a very real sense of soul running through the music, which is probably best captured on “Stone the Crow” in particular.
