Joyer formed in New Jersey in 2017. After releasing two self-recorded demo collections, they released their first studio album, Sun Into Flies, in 2020, followed by Perfect Gray in 2021, and Night Songs in 2024. Now based in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, the duo of multi-instrumentalist brothers Nick and Shane Sullivan is constantly evolving their sound. Their upcoming album, On the Other End of the Line…, sees Joyer at their most vulnerable, stripping away their previous slowcore and shoegaze approach to songwriting to focus on a more pop-driven indie rock sound. The album is set to arrive via Julia’s War Recordings on October 24.
“At The Movies” is our latest preview of Joyer’s anticipated new album and begins to highlight the band’s nuanced artistic evolution. With off-kilter yet unforgettable guitar riffs that add a jangly atmosphere, and distant vocals that balance a nimble presence with dynamic melodies, “At The Movies” creates a woozy dance between the band’s shoegaze roots and their thirst for something new. Joyer successfully fit their ambitions into a honed piece of indie rock that challenges genre norms by incorporating the band’s natural tendencies, such as raw simplicity bolstered by infectiousness. “At The Movies” is far from a young band attempting to force a change of sound, but a stunning testament to natural progression and the beauty that can result from simply allowing ideas to flourish freely. With a terrific single and a release date set, Joyer is primed to make an impact with On the Other End of the Line…, and “At The Movies” is just the start of this exciting new era for the band.
“This is one of our favorite songs off the album. We had so many ideas that it was hard to fully flesh out when demo-ing at home. It really came together in the studio when collaborating with Henry Stoehr, who recorded the album. We sort of threw a lot of stuff at him that he was able to help all make sense in the finished product,” explains Nick Sullivan. “I think it being such a process to make and the arc of how much it changed from inception to finish makes it one of the tracks that stands out most for us.”
