LISTEN: zoloft Crafts Lofty Psych-rock With Raw Passion On “eastward and clearing”

‘zoloft’ is a young, energetic indie rock band from Jefferson, OH. Their sound is a mix of the ’90s grunge/alt scene and ’60s/’70s psychedelic music. All six members are still in high school and have almost lifelong friendships, driving the band. Solely managed by themselves, they’ve released a lengthy catalogue of music within their first year working together, including thirteen singles, two EPs, and two full-length albums.

There is an unassuming atmosphere around zoloft that gives their lofty visions an inviting feeling, and their new single, “eastward and clearing,” is no different. The subtly psychedelic, wholeheartedly original single features jazzy undertones, courtesy of swinging, blaring horn melodies that groove over dense distortion, creating palpable sonic textures that explode with color. The band crafted a complex, dynamic arrangement that is immersive, but while the listener is washed over in the warmth, a passionate vocal performance cuts through it all. The band employs a vague yet potent approach to songwriting that paints vivid imagery with no bells or whistles —just a simple story that carries a world of emotions. zoloft is already shaping up to be an exhilarating band, and their individuality shines brighter than ever on “eastward and clearing.”

“‘eastward and clearing’ was monumental for the group. It quickly transformed from a strange basement studio experiment into a fan-favorite live song. Since its release, it’s been my personal favorite song,” explains singer/guitarist Basil Johnson.
