Hvor Er Skygge, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, is the solo project of Jeppe Dengsø, mixing shoegaze, electronic, jazz, and pop with wistful lyrics about light, nature, and dreams. Dengsø (multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer) creates all of the music and visuals for Hvor Er Skygge by himself and has been in the indie underground for almost a decade. He’s the ex-frontman of shoegazers Moon Loves Honey, who received hype on the blogosphere during their heyday, 2016-2019.
“Valmue,” the lead single from Dengsø’s anticipated sophomore LP, is a fantastically immersive journey through the artist’s technicolored approach to contemporary shoegaze. Dengsø’s latest is more than a proper introduction to the artist’s all-encompassing approach; it’s a world for the listener to explore, one lined with thrilling colors and unique textures. “Valmue” is playfully off-kilter, with its dense, searing guitars that are emphasized by the elephant-stomp-style drum patterns. Just as you are being washed over by immaculate production, Dengsø’s infectious, sugary vocals pull you by the hand and guide you through the warping psychedelia. There is a new Hvor Er Skygge album on the way, and “Valmue” is the exhilarating new single that hints at a creative breakthrough for Dengsø.
“In many ways, ‘Valmue’ sounds like how I want my life to be. Playful and beautiful. This past year, I’ve made changes in my life, getting closer to accepting life’s uncontrollability, breaking free from worry,” explains Dengsø. “’Valmue’ very much represents that feeling to me, which is why I chose it as the 1st single from this album that I’ve been knee deep in for so long. I’m super excited to share more from it.”
