We are all the main characters of our own story. That’s why, for singer-songwriter Gus Carrington, wasting away in the break room wasn’t enough. From starting The Stupid Reasons on his MacBook with the Little Light EP in 2020, to leading a cast of musical collaborators to record (Petunias), their debut album, tight songwriting and electrifying performances remain a staple for the Memphis band. With the addition of Gus’ brother, Luke Carrington, on synthesizer, a modern take on the folk instrumentation on (Petunias) took shape, drawing comparisons to artists like Susto and Sturgill Simpson.
“Pigeon Forge” is the third single from The Stupid Reasons in 2025, ushering in this new era of the band with anthemic Americana. There are nuggets of wisdom and sonic magic held within this seemingly conventional folk-rock tune, but this is a band that likes to keep its prowess unassuming, opting to wrap its individuality in digestible tidbits rather than forcing anything. “Pigeon Forge” features soaring harmonies whose beauty is emphasized by crashing drums and unpredictable mood shifts, creating a captivating single that is as danceable as it is meditative. There is a balance of facing harsh realities and finding the strength to push past them throughout the lyrics of “Pigeon Forge,” allowing The Stupid Reasons to explore the full spectrum of heartbreak without succumbing to it. A new chapter for The Stupid Reasons is well underway, and their latest single pushes the envelope even more with ambitious production techniques and vulnerable songwriting.
