Ten Million Lights has emerged as a sonic force in the Cascadia shoegaze scene, creating a captivating sound experience that sits at the apex of beauty and noise. The Portland, OR quartet, made up of Ryan Carroll (vocals), Eric Block (guitars), Russ Ellis (bass), and Gordon Nickel (drums), have a unique chemistry fueled by their shared love of motorcycles, guitars, and building things … like their practice space, personalized recording equipment, DIY light show, and a short run of limited-edition guitar pedals that accompanied their most recent release.
Carroll and Block have been performing together since 2003. The duo launched Ten Million Lights in 2010 after the implosion of their band Saturna following a West Coast tour with Bob Mould. Three LPs and a slew of EPs later, Ten Million Lights are thundering along, heavier and louder than ever.
Ten Million Lights is kicking off what is shaping up to be a busy 2026 with the release of “Punch The Ceiling.” The latest release from this genre-bending four-piece is as immersive as it gets, as the band captures their shoegaze tendencies and reshapes them to fit their lofty visions. The way the plush vocals miraculously navigate psychedelic tones and neck-breaking drum patterns to maintain a welcoming atmosphere throughout this experimental sonic journey showcases the band’s attention to detail. “Punch The Ceiling” is a nearly seven-minute track, but it never feels like it is dragging on. The many moving parts of this song are honed into tight, infectious melodies that playfully shift tones and moods. At the same time, the thudding drums and vulnerable lyrics anchor these soaring elements in reality. “Punch The Ceiling” properly introduces Ten Million Lights as a daring addition to a burgeoning shoegaze scene, as they successfully land on a sound they can call their own.
“‘Punch The Ceiling’ is all about wander, searching, and yearning for that thing that you know is missing from your life, but can’t seem to put your finger on,” explains the band. “You work your magic and lean into your intuition and find yourself back where you started, at home, in your place, at peace, surrounded by the ones you love.”
