What’s on the Tube today? Fresh music videos, live concert footage, crate digging and even a
nifty how-to video. Tune in and catch up with Nels Cline (of Wilco fame), Khruangbin,
Moonchild (along with Robert Glasper and D Smoke), and hip hop artists IDK.
Nels Cline – What’s In My Bag
Amoeba Music continues their “What’s In My Bag” series with their newest guest, guitarist Nels
Cline. After wandering around the Amoeba store in Hollywood, CA, Cline shares thoughts on
the bag of goodies he picked from the bins: almost all CDs (no records) plus a few buttons and
even a book, which spurs a humorous anecdote about Bob Marley. Without spoiling the specific
titles and artists he grabbed, let’s just say he went for a wonderful mix of jazz and punk rock,
including a couple titles from the ECM label, one from Nonesuch Records, and another from Trojan
Records, plus a whole heap more.
Khruangbin: KCRW Live From HQ (Full Performance)
In November, the marvelous and mellow trio Khruangbin celebrated the ten-year anniversary of
their soul-warming album The Universe Smiles Upon You by blessing fans with a freshly
re-recorded version. Much more recently, they popped by KCRW’s Annenberg Performance
Studio in Santa Monica, CA, to play those very re-imaginings live. Herein, KCRW provides
another amazing live set while Khruangbin proves yet again their prowess as a magnificently
melodious live band.
Moonchild – Up From Here ft. Robert Glasper & D Smoke [Official Lyric Video]
Closing in on the February release date of their upcoming album Waves, R&B band Moonchild
have teamed up with prolific jazz pianist Robert Glasper and hip hop head D Smoke for the
reassuring and enlivening track “Up From Here. Alongside the single, the trio (or rather
sextet, counting the members of Moonchild individually) released a music video giving us a
glimpse into a convivial rendition of the uplifting song. Glasper tickles the ivories and shows off
some dance moves, D Smoke spits a fittingly inspiring verse, and Moonchild demonstrates their
flute skills, edifying us in an entertaining episode of optimism.
HOW TO TIE A TiE – ETDS JAN 23
Hip hop artist IDK continues his riveting mixtape rollout with a short and simple yet deeply
profound how-to video on tying a tie. Coming up on January 23, IDK will be releasing e.t.d.s. A
Mixtape by .idk. , from which we have four singles so far with features from the late DMX and
the legendary Pusha T, as well as champions of the new school Joey Valence & Brae.
Theacronym in the tape title stands for “even the devil smiles”, possibly hinting at the mixtapesplace as a spiritual successor in IDK’s line of religion focussed albums, namely 2019’s Is He Real? and 2021’s follow up USEE4YOURSELF. After being charged for robbery with a deadly weapon at age 17, IDK was tried as an adult and served time as such, despite having never been given the tools most adults have been given, such as the knowledge and practice of tying a tie (leading him to show up to court dates dressed improperly, as he puts it). If you’ve never learned or need a refresher, tune in and IDK will teach you with more lessons likely to follow on his upcoming project.
