Golden Age Thursday Samples: Mashmakhan’s “Happy You Should Be Here” (1970) Gets Flipped By MF DOOM (2004) & Flight Distance (2011)

For all the millions upon millions of songs that have found their way to streaming services, a large number of records are still missing. While this does not mean it is impossible to find these records online, thanks to fellow music enthusiasts with the wherewithal to take vinyl and upload it to YouTube, it requires an extra step beyond Spotify that most people can’t find the time for. That’s where the magic of samples comes in. These ghostly vocals, which add jazzy touches or eerie undertones to Hip-hop, double as a map to the artist’s personal taste and possibly your new favorite record.

For this week’s Golden Age Thursday, we take a look at a band by the name of Mashmakhan, a Canadian soul-pop band that began just before the 1970s. This is an example of a terrific band with some incredibly stunning records that just never found their way to your digital streaming platform of choice, or maybe not in the conventional sense. Their song, “Happy You Should Be Here,” is a beautiful tune that juxtaposes the grit of nostalgic recording equipment with soaring harmonies and gentle keys. It is easy to fall in love with the tune the same way MF DOOM did, who used the song to create “Vomitspit” in 2004, or Flight Distance, who used portions of “Happy You Should Be Here” to make “Full Circle” in 2011.

Check out the original sample and how some Hip-hop giants flipped it below.
