Japanese/Canadian dance-punk trio Gaijin Smash blends the contrasting elements of pop culture that raised them, playing fast, driven lo-fi antipop bangers under the command of a paranormal drummer in a portable television. After releasing their debut single “Creeper” on Halloween 2019, Gaijin Smash embarked on their “Japanada Tour,” playing nine dates across six major cities in Japan and Canada. Following their single, “Ftw,” in 2022, Gaijin Smash has been relatively quiet until now.

The explosively complex “Mountain” marks the triumphant return of an innovative punk band that crosses genre boundaries without a second thought. The bilingual avalanche of lo-fi crunch reintroduces the trio as the forward-thinking band they set out to be years ago. “Mountain” finds the band dismounting from a toxic mindset, relishing that weightless feeling you get when you finally conquer an emotional downfall. The loose, jovial vocals that deliver the nuanced, uplifting lyrics are quickly juxtaposed by the cascading distortion and neck-breaking percussion, creating an infectious anthem just waiting to be replayed. 2026 is shaping up to be the year of Gaijin Smash, and their first release in years is a proper introduction to the refreshing approach of this young band.
