Anyone else out there find themselves dusting off their Kraftwerk records during the dark and icy recesses of winter? For this writer, the band’s infamously abstract, stoic, and mechanical variety of music has always been a fitting soundtrack for the often otherworldly conditions that typically characterize January in particular. And although Kraftwerk are primarily known for their uncanny mid/late 70s albums and their associated machinelike image, it took a lot of trial and error in the early part of the decade before they really hit their stride and found their trademark sound. Case in point is this fascinating footage of the band performing from way back in 1970, before a half befuddled/half giddy audience who were effectively witnessing the dawning of electronic music. While somewhat primitive/spastic compared to what was to come from Kraftwerk, it was still nonetheless groundbreaking and captivating.
