Tuesday’s Gone: Killing Joke Rules Goth-Rock Charmers With “Love Like Blood”

Keeping the sensual vibes going in the run-up to Valentine’s Day this week, for today’s Tuesday’s Gone, we’re showcasing another band that might not be the first to come to mind when thinking of sounds that suit the season: Killing Joke. But when lead singer Jaz Coleman wasn’t crafting dystopian post-punk dirges that were often preoccupied with impending nuclear apocalypse, apparently, he had love (and blood) on his mind when he penned the surprise crossover hit “Love Like Blood” way back in 1985. Indeed, the song was so infectious, with its distinctly disco-flavored, distorted guitar (and a healthy dose of gothic gloom), that it earned the band a spot on Top of the Pops, where they delivered this classic performance for all to see. Call it a guilty pleasure if you will, but “Love Like Blood” still stands to this day as one of the greatest goth-rock love songs of the era, making it a nice, subtly subversive pick for the season.
