Plastic Jaguar is the bi-coastal collaboration of Jordan Olberg and Scott Lingner, a friendship that started in college over a shared love of music and has evolved into something much bigger. Their sound weaves together a dense, detailed blend of guitar, piano, synth, brass, and woodwinds into a unique pastiche of psych-pop, post-punk, chamber pop, and jazz. The end result is music that is both emotionally dynamic and sonically adventurous, with no two songs sounding the same.
On their latest single, the dreamy alt-pop waltz “Out of Practice,” the ever-evolving duo continues to prove their singularity and fearlessness. The ethereal tune leaps from one genre to another with ease, beginning as a playful pop ballad before transitioning into a jazzier territory. Miraculously, Plastic Jaguar’s risky mood jumps never come off as forced, proving this duo’s innate ability to bridge sonic gaps with grace. “Out of Practice” feels like an entire EP packed into one four-minute track, as they dance from one sonic terrain to the next without losing sight of the thematic undertones that connect them. “Out of Practice,” despite its relaxed, psychedelic demeanor, is a powerful anthem about taking back control of your life. Plastic Jaguar takes the complexity of dissociation and poetically details it over a warping arrangement on “Out of Practice,” the latest release from a promising young duo.
“We’ve both spent a lot of time on the sidelines of our own lives, watching them like a spectator watches a game they have no control over,” explains the band. “‘Out of Practice’ is about what happens when you decide that’s not how you want to live anymore, when you step back into your life and body.”
