New Colors is the sophomore album from Brooklyn-based indie project Extra Space, set to be released on April 24.
The album is an exploration of the perception of time and the nuance and “New Colors” that give weight and beauty to the most seemingly ordinary moments. The record starts (“never wanted”), scattered and taken in the wind like pieces of foam, and travels on an 8-song journey culminating in (“babble”), making a pot of soup while a new baby plays—soft vocals atop intricately woven guitars and a sometimes off-kilter but precise backbone of drums and bass.
“Something Strange” is the latest single from Extra Space’s upcoming sophomore effort. The mysterious yet undeniable band delivers a spellbinding performance, combining their unassuming prowess with relaxed melodies that cascade around the listener. To call this single an immersive experience would be an understatement. Extra Space details a story of a weary traveler attempting to usher in a new chapter of their life, only to be haunted by the past. The slow-burning melodies seem inspired by our heroes’ crawl back to a sense of self and normalcy, while the psychedelic undertones of “Something Strange” hint that this battle is anything but fair. Whether you see yourself in this character, or you find the single to be an autobiographical account set to cosmic proportions, there is something inherent about this tune that has you running back for another listen. New Colors will be here before we know it, but “Something Strange” captures the ethereal nature that seems promised on Extra Space’s second outing.
