The infamous Ritchie Blackmore incident at the 1974 California Jam is one of the great “rock history went completely off the rails” moments — part protest, part tantrum, part performance art, and 100% Blackmore.
When Deep Purple took the stage at California Jam, tensions were already boiling. The band was furious over money disputes, billing issues, and broken promises from promoters. And if there was one guy in Purple least likely to quietly swallow that frustration, it was Blackmore.
Mid-set, Blackmore snapped. He smashed his Stratocaster into a TV camera, sending sparks and shards flying — not a prop, not planned by the production. Then he turned on his amps, destroying them one by one, stabbing speaker cabinets until they caught fire. As if the amp destruction wasn’t enough, the stage literally exploded. Fireballs shot up, crew members scattered, and the band was forced to flee. It remains one of the most dangerous onstage moments in major rock festival history.
