Também is a trio of musicians with a DIY approach who produce their eclectic, nature-inspired music in their bassist’s garage, finding inspiration from many sources: Herbie Hancock’s angular improvisations, Hiatus Kaiyote’s effect-laden sound design, the contemplative poetry of Rumi, and the playfulness of Hermeto Pascoal’s universal music, to name a few. Spiritual lyricism, rhythmic play, improvisation, and a palpable deep listening between Ingrid Knight (piano/vocals), Gastón Reggio (drums), and Andy Powell (bass) form the trio’s down-to-earth aesthetic.
Masters of contemporary jazz fusion that refuses to adhere to tropes, Também returns with a stunning new single, “Broken Open.” Their innate, intricate approach to jazz opens the doors to a world of sonic possibilities, with the trio walking down the path of uplifting, detailed balladry on their first release of 2026. “Broken Open” employs an ethereal atmosphere, lush with Knight’s captivating vocals, and anchored to earth by Reggio’s expert percussion and Powell’s warping basslines. There are solos tinted with psychedelia that nod to the trio’s jazz heroes, but “Broken Open” is wholeheartedly about Também and their individuality. Lyrically, the band draws on poetry from the past that miraculously applies to modern times, in hopes of finding a silver lining amid the avalanche of bad news delivered directly to our phones each day. Também wants you to dance through the pitfalls of daily life on “Broken Open,” a heartwarming single that introduces the trio as fearless players in modern jazz.
“Our song ‘Broken Open’ is based on a poem written by the Persian poet Rumi called ‘Dance when you’re broken open,’” explains the band. “Around this time last year, I found myself really inspired by the text and compelled to set it to a song. 2025 was a difficult year in many ways, and Rumi’s line ‘dance in the middle of the fight’ kept repeating in my mind.”
