Ok Cowgirl, the Brooklyn-based project led by songwriter Leah Lavigne, pairs emotionally direct songwriting with expansive, textured arrangements – a balance that comes into full focus on their debut LP, Couldn’t Save Us From My Gut (2024), produced by Alex Farrar (MJ Lenderman, Indigo De Souza, Wednesday). The record, which explores themes of self-trust, romantic unraveling, and modern pressure, marked a turning point for the band, building on earlier support from FLOOD, Brooklyn Vegan, and The Line of Best Fit, as well as playlisting across Spotify Fresh Finds and TIDAL Rising.
On their first single since the release of their breakthrough 2024 LP, Ok Cowgirl continues to push closer to the top of modern indie rock on “It Wasn’t You, It Was The Feeling.” The dark, emotionally complex anthem showcases the individuality this band brings to a burgeoning contemporary scene, with vocals tinged with longing that deliver vulnerable, poetic lyrics, underscored by a subdued yet explosive arrangement. There is a relatability to “It Wasn’t You, It Was The Feeling” that makes the otherworldliness of this performance feel reachable, a testament to OK Cowgirl’s magnificent approach to songwriting. That familiar feeling comes from the emotions detailed in the lyrics, where we find ourselves fantasizing about a love that was never really there, and the harsh crash back to reality when that dream dissolves. “It Wasn’t You, It Was A Feeling” is a proper introduction to the next chapter of Ok Cowgirl, one that is already promising an artistic evolution from an already singular band.
