Surtsey is an indie rock band formed in 2009 out of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The band began releasing music together in 2010 with their Broken Beds triple single, a proper introduction to the band’s wide-ranging prowess. Future releases, like the 2020 single “Sotting Wendell / Hoss” and 2022’s “Lyrics & Birthdays,” showcased a more focused, twangy energy paired with lo-fi bliss. 2024 saw the release of their Nothing Doing EP, which highlighted Surtsey’s ability to craft a five-song project that proved their most infectious and focused to date. 2026 began with another reimagining of Surtsey’s singularity with the breezy ballad “Coast,” and the emotional, warping “Limerence.”
The latest single from Surtsey marks their second release of 2026 and a proper continuation of the band’s journey to individuality. “Limerence” is a dramatic, cinematic listen with soaring guitar riffs and even more acrobatic vocals that deliver a palpable performance. This is the type of song that lingers in the room long after the nearly six-minute run time. “Limerence” combines an atmospheric arrangement with a cathartic vocal performance, allowing the band’s musicianship to shine as it details a moment of acceptance. The beautifully poetic lyrics and spacious yet urgent arrangement allow the listener to find their own meaning in the vague yet potent songwriting. The lyrics of “Limerence” paint a vibrant portrait of longing, almost as if getting these words out were the final moments before Surtsey succumbs to their romantic obsession. Surtsey is back in a big way, and their latest single doubles as an emotional release for the band and an introduction to the latest chapter in the band’s story.
