Continuing our look back at the ’80s era of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, one of the most entertaining moments from the early-years documentary on Netflix is the band’s very first television appearance.
It came on the late-night show Thicke of the Night, hosted by Alan Thicke, where a very young—and let’s just say extremely excitable—Chili Peppers made their debut. This early lineup featured Anthony Kiedis, Flea, drummer Cliff Martinez, and guitarist Jack Sherman.
The performance, which aired in March 1984, is as chaotic as you might expect—far from their finest hour, but undeniably full of raw energy and attitude on the rather lackluster tune “Get Up and Jump.”
Thicke of the Night would be canceled just a few months later, and both the band and its host would move on to bigger and better things—though not without a few memorable “growing pains” along the way.
