Golden Age Thursday: RKL (Rich Kids on LSD) Might Be Most Underrated Punk Band Ever

If it weren’t for the typical tribulations that plagued punk bands, such as constant lineup changes and a lack of money and business sense, Rich Kids On LSD had all the makings of punk icons. All that said, the legacy left behind by this California outfit is far from one to ignore, and if there is any question as to why, simply listen to tunes like “Hangover” or the complexity of this week’s Golden Age Thursday video.

Through battles with labels and disgruntled band members, RKL still managed to put together an impressive discography, starting with Keep Laughing in 1985 and Rock ‘N Roll Nightmare in 1987. The latter contained a song that broke through the mold of punk with explosive, complicated bass melodies and musical prowess typically associated with acts from Oxnard, California, although the band formed in Motecito. This brings us to this week’s Golden Age Thursday, and it is a doozy. Prepared for your brain to melt and your soul to fill with raw energy as RKL rip through “Blacked Out” live. The footage comes from Tribal Area #4, a video zine series compiling all things punk. You can watch RKL rip through this classic tune below.
