LISTEN: Dave Helgi Johan’s “Lonely Flower” Is Emotional Indie Rock With Poetic Flair

Hailing from a small Icelandic community in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. Dave Helgi Johan moved to Byron Bay in 2019 to actively pursue music full-time as a solo musician while playing and collaborating with many local artists. His sound has been described as Lo-fi Indie, Folk, and Alt Country.

Johan has performed and toured for the last decade in countless acts. Recorded and released a handful of albums and music videos in past groups and has finally committed himself to a solo career. He has opened for the likes of Mac DeMarco, Kim Churchill, PS I Love You, and The Mowgli’s. He has played many music festivals, including Canada Music Week, Winnipeg Folk Festival, in Australia, Byron Bay Surf Festival, Arlie Beach Festival of Music, Strum Fest, Great Barrier Reef Festival, and more.

“Lonely Flower” is the new single from Johan that whisks the listener away into a flourishing field of soulful harmonies and slow-burning emotional releases. The heartfelt, moving ballad finds the artist in a vulnerable state as the artist expresses pain and grief, but in a turn of events, no regrets. “Lonely Flower” explores the confusing mindset of being willing to be hurt by someone just to feel close to them again. This level of longing is palpable, even if you can’t understand the sentiment. Johan does a beautiful job of painting a crying individual with a smile as he fearlessly enters into a confusing era of someone’s life. The honesty of the lyrics is emphasized by the raw passion behind the vocal performance, and even more so through the sparse arrangement. The release of emotions that is the vocals on “Lonely Flowers” fills in the spaces left by the thudding drums and soaring guitar melodies, with all these elements coming together to paint a portrait of a broken heart that is ready to break again
