LISTEN: Brian K & The Parkway Get Vulnerable Over Soulful Rock On “Scarecrow”

Brian K & The Parkway play earnest and expressive Rock & Roll that’s drawn comparisons to Tom Petty, ‘70s Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Warren Zevon, and The Replacements. Their 2024 debut album, Killing The Bear, is a musical and lyrical journey from the Gulf Shores of the American South to the Green Mountains of Vermont; from a crowded bazaar in the Middle East to drought-stricken California; from the Rock & Soul of the Jersey Shore to heartbreak in the American heartland.

“Scarecrow” is the latest single from Brian K & The Parkway. The freshly released tune brings to light the true expansiveness of the band’s range, as they pen a folksy tune with palpable emotions and imagery and wrap it in a glistening psych-soul package. With twinkling keys and guitar riffs that melt over a heartfelt vocal performance, “Scarecrow” is a stunning look into the band’s powerful, nuanced fusion work. While it is easy to get lost in the sonic terrain of the single, lyrically, Brian K is opening up his heart for all to see. The artist brings us past the moment of heartbreak, when you realize the scars from the past aren’t fully healed, and receding into yourself. The artist details the isolation so poignantly throughout “Scarecrow,” a moving new ballad that allows Brian K & The Parkway’s attention to detail and raw songwriting to shine.

“‘Scarecrow’ is a song about someone who is still healing after the end of a relationship, and has adopted a metaphorical scarecrow persona to try to avoid future pain,” explains Brian K. “They are at the point where they can offer help to their former partner who has fallen on hard times, but not willing to let them — or anyone else — into their heart just yet.”
