LISTEN: The Sways Craft Lush Balladry Filled With Longing On “Feels Like Deja Vu”

The Sways are a rising indie trio from northern Arizona, made up of multi-instrumentalists Kyle Miller, Andrew Tyler, and Adam Bruce. Drawing from a wide range of musical pasts, they write, perform, and produce everything from scratch, blending the warmth of ’70s folk-rock elevated with a modern, atmospheric edge. Their debut single, “I Have Been the Moon,” showcases their signature sound: rich acoustic textures, heartfelt vocals, and haunting harmonies that create a slow-burning, emotional journey. The band’s self-titled debut EP arrived on September 19.

“Feels Like Deja Vu” is an early favorite from The Sways’s freshly-released EP. The project does a stunning job of introducing the pop-leaning, Americana-tinted indie rock of the band. Still, this performance in particular begins to shine a light on the singular approach of The Sways. With a psychedelic, soulful undertone that uplifts the heartfelt vocal performance, The Sways put together an intricate piece of fusion work that doubles as a cathartic release for some complex emotions. The band croons of falling victim to a toxic cycle, a truly heartbreaking realization for anyone, but The Sways turned this bleak reality into a moving field of lushness. The bright yet moody sonics of “Feels Like Deja Vu” successfully juxtapose the harsh reality explored in the lyrics, introducing The Sways as a young band with an attention to detail that already sounds sharpened on their debut EP.

“‘Feels Like Deja Vu,’ as the title suggests, evokes a feeling of nostalgia, bringing back memories that are as lush and vivid as its production. The layered vocal harmonies in the chorus are haunting yet soothing, carrying a sense of both magic and mysticism that has bloomed from conception to completion,” explains the band when asked about “Feels Like Deja Vu.” “In these strange times, it’s a song many may find themselves deeply moved by.”
