The music world suffered a terrible loss earlier with the passing of neo-soul pioneer D’Angelo on the morning of October 14. The singer was 51. The news of the Grammy-award-winning artist’s passing came from his family in a statement made to Variety.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life…After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025,” reads the statement from the singer’s family. “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
Over the course of three albums—1995’s Brown Sugar, 2000’s Voodoo, and his futuristic 2014 return, Black Messiah —D’Angelo revolutionized neo-soul with sinister yet sweet falsettos and palpable songwriting. The artist’s elusive yet impactful career is highlighted by fearless creativity and hits like “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” “Brown Sugar,” and “Really Love.” The artist brought soulful tropes to hypnotic Hip-hop, blending his innate vocal talents with the likes of DJ Premiere and Questlove. He pushed not only the boundaries of his own genre but also the limits of any musician to come into his orbit. D’Angelo leaves behind a collection of timeless discography, a loving family, and an enduring impact on music as a whole.
