Dominique Fils-Aimé is a Polaris Music Prize-nominated singer-songwriter from Montreal who draws inspiration from soul icons of the 40’s and 60’s such as Billie Holiday, Etta James, and Nina Simone. While her musical roots are grounded in early soul and jazz, her sound transcends contemporary urban soundscapes. The artist’s new album, My World Is The Sun, is set to be released on February 20 via Ensoul Records. The 15-song LP will mark Fils-Aimé’s first album since 2023 and feature the 2025 single, “Going Home.”
Along with the previously released single, the news of the album is accompanied by the eerie gentleness of “The River.” The latest single from Fils-Aimé is a beautifully crafted jazz ballad with a haunting beauty that emphasizes the poetic nature of the artist’s words. The way her spellbinding vocals coil around the moody piano melodies creates an ethereal atmosphere, one for the listener to get lost in. The alluring nature of Fils-Aimé’s vocals entices the listener into this otherworldly performance, as her acrobatic range fills the space left by the sparse arrangement. While all of these elements build together to create a nostalgic tune, this is far from an amalgamation of tropes from jazz’s past. Fils-Aimé spins these familiar tendencies into psychedelic wonders, with harmonies that swell with drama and tone shifts that make her poetry palpable. With a new album on the way, Fils-Aimé prepares listeners for what is gearing up to be a statement piece with “The River.” The latest single from My World Is The Sun is a mesmerizing slice of contemporary jazz that refuses complacency and rather builds a sonic universe it can call its own.
