Adam Gaffney and the Balladeers’ album Product of Another Sad Song (out May 8) is a somber and emotional exploration of losing his mother to cancer, loves lost and found, and returning from the brink to embrace sobriety. Made up of 13 songs and four short poems, Product of Another Sad Song gives nods to traditional country troubadours like George Jones, the folk-influenced lyric structures of Bob Dylan, and the obstinate, rebellious spirit of Neil Young.

It would appear Gaffney is gearing up for the release of some of his most mature, vulnerable work to date on Product of Another Sad Song, but the latest single proves that this is going to be far from a downtrodden effort. “Darlin’,” the latest single from the upcoming LP, is a celebration of love triumphing in the darkest corners, shining a light on the things that really matter, and drawing a map of escape from isolation. Gaffney opens up about the moment he found love on “Darlin’,” as he celebrates emerging on the other side of his vices, only thanks to the hands reaching out to pull him in the right direction. Gaffney delivers this uplifting storytelling tune with traditional country tendencies, with twangy, sleek guitar riffs driving the arrangement beneath the vocal’s soulful undertones. “Darlin’” is a proper introduction to the new Adam Gaffney and The Balladeers, as this band evolves into an undeniable country act carving out their own lane in a burgeoning scene.

“I was practically homeless, paying 300 bucks to sleep on a friend’s couch every month… no car,” says Gaffney. “I met Christy on my first day at the Tick Tock Tavern. She was wearing a sick-ass Budweiser t-shirt. We smoked together on the non-smoking patio. I just thought she was so cool. We didn’t date until a few years later, after I got my shit together. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll is only cool for so long before it becomes toxic. It was either I quit drinking, or maybe I’d have to quit music. Now we’re planning on getting married later this year.”
