25 years ago today, (1/16/01) Azure Ray released their self-titled debut album. Built almost entirely around voice, acoustic guitar, and sparse cello, the record feels less like a traditional album and more like a private journal accidentally left open. Formed by Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink in Omaha, Nebraska, Azure Ray emerged from the same creative ecosystem as Saddle Creek Records’ most introspective artists.
