80 years ago today (3/4/46), Frank Sinatra released his debut album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra. Originally issued as a set of four 78 rpm records—collecting eight songs that had previously been released as singles—the album marked the beginning of Sinatra’s reign as a solo superstar.
The record soared to No. 1 on the early Billboard album chart, where it held the top spot for seven weeks and remained on the chart for a total of eighteen weeks in 1946. At the time, the album chart was still in its infancy, consisting of just a Top Five until August 1948.
Take a listen to the very first track on his very first album: “You Go to My Head.”
