Happy 60th birthday to Jerry Cantrell, born March 18, 1966. As guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and primary songwriter for Alice in Chains, Cantrell helped shape one of the most influential catalogs of the Seattle grunge era, from Facelift and Dirt to the Sap and Jar of Flies EPs.
After the loss of frontman Layne Staley in 2002, the band regrouped in 2005 for a benefit show with guest vocalists, eventually returning to the road in 2006 with William DuVall stepping in as full-time lead singer. Since then, they’ve remained active, touring steadily and releasing new music, while Cantrell himself has released two new solo albums in the past five years.
Revisit a softer yet defining moment with their haunting performance of “Nutshell” on MTV Unplugged (1996).
